MetroWest Chamber Veterans Initiative

July 23, 2009

The Chamber is developing a program to help Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, as well as veterans of earlier conflicts who are still in need, to successfully re-integrate into society. We owe them a very great debt of gratitude.

The initiative will involve working with a variety of public and private agencies to identify ex-servicemen and women who are interested in exploring internships and mentorships in particular fields with appropriate Chamber member companies. The agencies would also refer to the Chamber veterans interested in starting businesses, and we in turn would link them with appropriate programs associated with the Chamber.

The initiative follows a needs analysis conducted by Chamber Chair Michelle Drolet (Towerwall) and John Stone (TCG Network Services) that involved consultation with local governmental and educational organizations to learn what they are doing and how we might help them achieve their veterans assistance goals as we fulfill our wish to help them. The Chamber wants to avoid duplication of efforts and learn how best to support and compliment the efforts of others.

Some of the organizations will include the Massachusetts Department of Employment and Training, the Metro South/West Regional Employment Board’s Career Centers, the Veterans Administration, the Massachusetts Veterans Initiative, Framingham State College, MassBay Community College, Becker College, the Small Business Development Center (of the Small Business Administration-SBA) at Clark University and the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). By connecting with them, we’ll be helping them achieve their goals as well as our own.

Drolet and Stone emphasize that Chamber members providing internships and mentoring stand to benefit in strictly business terms, even while satisfying a wish to help the returning veterans. The Chamber organizers also note that Veterans who become involved in the Chamber program will continue to have the support of the agencies that referred them.

The MetroWest Chamber Veterans Initiative was officially launched in November 2008. Please contact John Stone at TCG Network Services, 508-650-9917, ext. 314 or email him at jstone@tcgns.com to express your interest in helping out with this important initiative.

As a result of his extensive work with the MetroWest Chamber and the Veteran's Initiative, TCG's John Stone has been asked to represent the Chamber in the signing of the Army Community Covenant for the Soldiers Systems Center in Natick, MA. The Army Community Covenant recognizes the strength of Soldiers and Families and the support of the Community. It reaffirms the dedication to community partnerships with military bases and personnel.
